Ceramic Engineering major has a mission to raise professionals needed in the fields of fine ceramic and other ceramic upon which cutting-edge strategy industries using ceramic materials is based. These industries include the automotive, energy, aerospace, electric, electronics, information communication, and biotic material. Ceramic material is the combination of metal and non metal ions (e.g. an oxidized substance, a nitride, a carbide). For ceramic material, the major focuses on the inter-relationships of the combination of atom, crystal structures, fine structures, and production process with the physical, mechanical, electronic characteristics of the material. Based on the above studies, students do research on how to improve the performance of existing ceramic materials (structural ceramic of thermal resistance, ware-resistance, and high temperature and strength resistance, and electronic ceramic of semiconductor, dielectric substance, piezo electric material, and magnetic substance), and also on developing new functional materials like biotic substances and environment-purifying materials. To nurture the professional and technological capability related with the field of ceramics, this major teaches a variety of classes and labs. There are such major subjects as physics and chemistry for ceramic, science of ceramic, processing of ceramic, solid thermodynamics, physical ceramics, x-ray crystallography, study of electronic microscope, electronic ceramics, structural ceramics, etc.
